Our mission

Leading AI experts agree that superintelligent AI poses an extinction risk. Industry leaders estimate that, without outside intervention, they will create AI systems powerful enough to pose this extinction risk within the next two to five years. Urgent action to prevent this extinction risk is needed.

The gap in "AI safety"

The majority of organizations in the "AI safety" field, whether for profit or non-profit, only nominally work on reducing extinction risk from superintelligent AI. Most of these organizations are affiliated with one of the major AI companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind). The remaining organizations are deeply embedded in the Bay Area subculture, which is strongly libertarian and techno-optimist, and which views government intervention in the public interest with skepticism.

As a result, most organizations in the "AI safety" field never mention extinction risk from superintelligent AI to policymakers or the public, or they obscure their beliefs and goals through vague wording and euphemisms.

Policymakers and the public should know that superintelligent AI poses an extinction risk.

Our response

CASIR's goal is to change that. Policymakers and the public should know that superintelligent AI poses an extinction risk, and what can be done to avert that risk. CASIR wants to build an ecosystem of organizations and individuals that work to reduce extinction risk from superintelligent AI, and that speak publicly and honestly about this extinction risk.

The members of this ecosystem commit to straightforward and honest communication about extinction risk with policymakers and the public, and to reducing extinction risk from superintelligent AI by transparently engaging with democratic institutions.
